To Live is to Have Problems and to Solve Problems Means Growing Intellectually
To live, is to have problems and to “solve problems” is to grow intellectually,” quoted J. P. Guilford.
In other words, we all run into or face problems sometime, or the other. Problems can be work related, or personal problems and it can be said that one man’s solution to a problem could turn to be another’s nightmare. This is because according to Guilford’s “Structure of Intellect” (SI) theory, an individual’s performance on intelligence tests can be traced back to the underlying mental abilities, or factors of intelligence.
Personal Problem
About five years ago, I became handicapped and this put me in a catch-22 situation. Here I was all set to go out for any little excuse but for some reason or the other, I just couldn’t get myself to doing it. It was absolute misery and it wasn’t a surprise when things spiraled quickly out of control. I managed to alienate myself from most of my friends and family and infact did a good job of it. It was then the computer and the net came to my rescue. It’s funny which how much you can do with this machine. There is enormous potential out there for mothers based at home who can work out wonders with this machine and the net and this applies to men working from home as well
Since then, it became a full time relationship with the computer and net and the question of doing another job did not even arise. Now, the subject question here is; whenever you ever run into such serious problems, what are the methods or processes that have been adopted in resolving it.
Sometimes, the problems resolve itself like in my case, and all it required was some time. In other words, it did not require any outside help, such as a shrink to resolve it. Ofcourse, I did visit a shrink but that’s another story and we’ll leave that for a rainy day
I say this because when you encounter problems and tend to ignore them, they just disappear. It gives you the feeling that when you tend to ignore them, they just solve itself. It’s magical, solutions emerge from nowhere. In fact, this method made me more relaxed and I refused to view problems as they are. Instead I only view them as solutions that have encountered a minor setback or delay.
Theoretically, majority of the problems resolve themselves in the long run. All that remains are the worry and tension that it caused. In a time based scenario, the only “problem” is that we don’t know when the so-called problem would be resolved and the time-period could cause quite a bit of misery.
So let’s assume as per the subject topic we have run into a generic problem that need solutions. A problem as such cannot be described, as it must be remembered that no problem can exist in the absence of an objective. That is to say, we need to know exactly where we want to arrive so that we can properly determine our track, as well as direction.
In his lateral thinking theory, DeBono stressed the importance of “looking at a problem with a fresh perspective”. In other words, knowing our direction is an important aspect in problem solving.
Now, the first thing when I encounter a problem is change or restructure my way of thinking. For this I need sleep. By sleep, I mean a sound sleep. The sleep gives me a relaxed mind, and makes problem-solving far easier, instead of purely relying on intuition. After a sound sleep, your approach to solve the problem becomes more systematic, more balanced and logical. Starting from that point it becomes easier to see what lies in front of you.
The SIX Processes
After the sleep, it is better to split the problem into smaller problems and begin solving it step by step. It is realistic when you do this and write the processes down, as you would very soon begin to see the possible solutions that underlie within each problem. That is to say, in order to resolve problems effectively one has to understand the whole process and their role in making the problems work. And as we live in a talking culture, it is imperative that we put these things in writing. This procedure helps you identify the best solution embedded within each problem
After writing it down, the next step in our hypothetical problem is to identify pain points, if any, and identify the connections between the connecting pain points. This would help me understand the problem better and then take on the objectives and translate them into structured programs. Then I could evaluate which solution has the most advantages, and further break down these solutions into different stages, while at the same time conduct a SWOT analysis between solutions.
Thirdly, I will reflect on the possible solutions while consulting friends and relatives, and then conduct a strategic analysis and begin to tailor solutions according to feedback and sentiments. This would eventually result in deeper penetration and a larger perception of the whole problem
Stage number four is to evaluate all possible solutions, i.e., reviewing the problem point by point, while analyzing the pros and cons of each solution. The next step or stage number five is when I implement the decision. Last of all, stage number six is post-decision justification or evaluation of the outcome. Ofcourse this also means the implementation of any follow-up actions required.
Now the question is what have all these so called stages to do with my personal situation. Although, I applied all these processes, none of these methods were adopted in my case as the solution to my problem turned out to be time and patience. It was just out of frustration I started toying with the computer, and which eventually materialized in to a hobby and subsequently into a job. It is only when you encounter or run into problems, only then, these so called strategies materialize. In other words, it is only when you start visualizing the problem mathematically, you begin to analyze what the problem really is, and start approaching it in an organized and logical manner. Then the whole problem becomes easier to solve.
Conclusion
It is only when you start visualizing the problem mathematically, you begin to analyze what the problem really is and start approaching it in an organized and logical manner. Then the whole problem becomes easier to solve.
Don’t ever make the mistake of making the problem bigger than it is, as any solution appears to be good, and the actual problem is only as big as you perceive it to be. You should always visualize that you are “bigger” than the problem itself. This gives it a positive outlook, which definitely counts in solving problems in the long run. Finally, never give up whatever the problem may be. Just stick in there. You will soon find a solution. Remember, it is just that problems help you to enhance your ability to live happily.
Once you solve a problem, the feeling and satisfaction of solving it is so great that explaining it has just no words. In Living a Life That Matters, Harold S. Kushner (the Massachusetts rabbi whose best selling books include When Bad Things Happen to Good People) suggests that the most successful lives are the ones that most effectively manage and “solve their problems”.

Global Warming
“With public sentiment nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed. Consequently, he who molds public sentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes than he who enacts or pronounces decisions.” Abraham Lincoln.
People exist always only in combination with nature, they can not be separated from it by any means and thus any kind of changes either positive or negative are always reflected in our lives. Long time ago one of the main problems on the planet became the global climate change. The Artic ice starts to melt and disappear, Latin America and South America suffer from lethal storms and floods. Europeans have to face melting glaciers, forest fires and heat waves. The tree rings and ancient coral in ice cores show that the world has not been as warm before as it is now. The warmest years were all starting since 1998. Most of these changes are influenced by human activities, as people burn the nature’s stores of coal, oil and natural gas. As a result billions of tones of carbon dioxide come into the air annually. Some scientists even suppose that these changes were caused by the dawn of agriculture. The well known phenomenon connected with global warming is greenhouse effect. CO2 is a greenhouse gas that makes the obstacle for the Sun radiation in the troposphere, the lower atmosphere. Some researches also show that cosmic rays are also connected with this effect. As soon as the atmospheric CO2 rises the global temperatures are luckily to rise by around 2C to 5 C. As a result the ice starts to melt, changes in clouds and vegetation occur and so on. When the glaciers melt, they will certainly cause some rivers to overflow, while others will be emptied. The situations with water resources might cause conflicts in different regions. All this will of course influence the natural ecosystems, as not all species can move quickly enough to put up with the global warming, for example coral reefs. The melting ices will influence not only the level of rivers’ water, but also the level of the oceans is disturbed. And if the level of the ocean rises 6 meters higher, that would be enough to flood the lands of billions of people.
Forests and oceans on our planet were able to absorb about half of the CO2 people produced, but since 2001 the amount of CO2 is twice bigger, which really limits the resources of the nature.
Methane is the second most important gas for greenhouse effect. The effect of methane is even 20 times greater than carbon dioxide, but there is less methane in the atmosphere. Methane influences 25% of global warming. Methane is produced by cows and termites. Thus agriculture and rice growing can produce methane. Besides coal mining and oil wells also produce methane. The level of methane in the atmosphere is constantly increasing – this is also an alarming fact for the Earth climate.
Public Health organizations are also worried about global warming, as researches state that the global warming is luckily to increase human mortality, when the cases of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and other parasites increase. But the American Council on Science and Health announced the conclusions of its study which show that such diseases could become serious problems for people disregarding global warming and that these diseases can be prevented not only by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The aim of these conclusions was certainly to make the diseases for the government not associated with global warming. The findings of the American Council on Science and Health were as follows:
- As the World Health Organization states that there are more than 500 million cases of malaria each year, malaria can not be caused only by warming of the climate, the increasing of the temperature can increase the incidents of malaria only by 10-16%.
- The ACSH studies were also stating that wealth can bring health and stimulate long living, whereas poverty is one of the reasons for hard diseases and short life spans. And public health would be put at risk when great economic costs could go on control of greenhouse gas emissions, as it could lead to poverty.
- Yellow fever, malaria and other tropical diseases could be prevented with fewer costs than those needed to restrict greenhouse gas emissions, for example: use of vaccinations, judicious use of pesticides and biological control methods, usage of mosquito and fly screens and public education.
- Spending money for reducing greenhouse gas emissions means that this money can not be used for better methods of preventing the above mentioned diseases, as better nutrition and sanitation.
This was one of the bright examples how the problem of global warming is not treated in a proper way in order to solve the financial and other problems of the high politic leaders, who care really not much for the future of the whole planet.
But no matter what is said, global warming still stays a great problem of the whole mankind. Certainly it is not possible to stop all human activities that disturb the atmosphere as they are connected with producing food and making people warm. But we should not forget that some predictions about global warming are close to tragic. People are controlling the whole Earth as there are almost no places, which never felt the hand of a human. And thus the whole responsibility is on people. There are certain measures to at least avoid the worst case, the disaster on the planet. People can reduce of greenhouse gas emissions with the help of energy conservation, like turning the computers and other technical devices off, when they do not use them, use compact fluorescent lights, unplug the chargers of cell phones and digital cameras and so on.
The issues of global warming and fossil fuel usage are certainly closely connected. The use of oil and natural resources will decline in a decade. But this would not reduce the carbon dioxide emissions automatically, the replacements with coal, heavy oil and tar sand contain even more carbon, if to make them produce the same amount of energy they will produce twice more carbon. But the fact is that all transport, roads and airports for this transport are useless without oil. To create a new transport system is a task for the whole society, not for an individual, besides it would need money, time, natural resources and a lot of brain power. So the previous arguments concerning a lot of money spent on the stopping or at least slowing the global warming can be put aside against these ones.
The projections made for the future state that Earth will be an ice planet without greenhouse effect, the Earth will get warmer, by the 2100 the temperature will be 1.5 C – 4.5 C warmer, the increase will be less in the southern hemisphere and greater in the northern hemisphere. The global temperature is connected with carbon dioxide level and methane level, which at the moment exceed greatly the past levels.
It is necessary to mention some facts concerning the future in order to understand why the global warming can be considered a disaster for the whole planet. Certainly it is not possible to know the future climate on Earth precisely, but some data are certain: every century brings the increase of the temperature of 1-2C. It is enough for Greenland and Antarctica to start melting, thus some part of northern areas could become a farmland and Sahara might become bigger. Storms can be stronger. Some countries like Bangladesh and Netherlands are luckily to vanish because of the ocean level rise up to 5 meters.
The term “climate forcings” is often used though it is hard to give its precise definition. To define it simply – this is an event that influences global climate. At this point it is necessary to mention that the weather and climate are different things, the weather is described with the help of variations of dryness or wetness, cold and heat. They do not play a great role for the whole picture on the Earth, but climate can be influenced by forcings, like for example a volcanic eruption can cool the climate on the whole Earth. Such forcing is called a short term forcing. An example of long term forcing may be continental drift which within millions of years changes the path of ocean currents. To anthropogenic forcings belong fossil fuel burning and agriculture. Not all forcings of humans result in global warming, sulfur dioxide from coal burning produces aerosols and they result in cooling.
These were the main negative influences on the climate that cause the global warming. They are rather serious and need urgent steps taken by people in order to avoid the catastrophes in the world of nature, to which we by the way also belong.
So the climate of the Earth should be an international concern and not only of scientists and ordinary people, but also of those who hold power in their hand and are able to make the politics work not only for money, but also for the future of the whole mankind. Unfortunately, these are mostly beautiful words and promises when elections are in the future as soon as they are over the real situation changes. Not a single national leader has come out publicly and said that the recent spate of hurricanes was the result of global warming, this is a part of conventional wisdom of environmentalists that they should not frighten the public, but should focus their interest on technical solutions, like for example hybrid cars and so on.
Global warming is such a problem that it is necessary to deal with all its aspects, which includes the politics. When politicians formulate their policy they need inputs from many disciplines and from science as well. But unfortunately global warming has become an absolutely political issue and politicians do their best to influence even science.
In 1992 at the Earth Summit the decision to prevent such dangerous climate change was taken. The first step was the 1997 Kyoto protocol, which is supposed to come into force in 2005.
One of the reports of the U.N. Panel on Climate Changes warns that the U.S. and other wealthy countries should immediately cut their oil and gas consumption and agree to get at least a quarter of their electrical energy from renewable resources – solar and wind power; and that they should double their research spending on low-carbon energy by 2010.In 1997 the U.S. Senate voted 95-0 to make Clinton Administration not to send the Kyoto treaty to Capitol Hill for ratification. In his first term president Bush rejected Kyoto. Russia ratified it, but most believe that Putin was made to do that as British Prime Minister and other European Union officials threatened not to let him become a member of World Trade Organization, which could cost Russia billions of dollars each year. But the chief economic adviser of Putin – Andrei Illarionov shows his doubts as for the upholding commit to Kyoto, he says: “There is no evidence confirming a positive linking between the level of carbon dioxide and temperature change. The U.N. Panel’s so called scientific data are considerably distorted and in many cases falsified” (Can We Defuse the Global Warming Time Bomb?, by James Hansen, 2003, pp.2-15). One of the main ideas of Ilarionov and others is to break the advanced economies of the U.S., Europe and Japan, by persuading the multi-national companies to move plants and jobs to developing countries in order not to comply with emissions restrictions. But the president of the American Policy Center in Washington – Tom DeWeese doesn’t agree that it makes sense, he states as the main concern and the prime target is the wealth of the United States it would not be wise to place factories in Third World countries, as the same amount of emissions would come out from jungles of South America instead of Chicago and in this case we are not talking about the protection of the environment any more. He is right in a way.
The main goal of the meeting in Kyoto was signing the amendment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (the Rio Treaty) in order to require the signatory nations to take the necessary steps to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, as these gases cause an alarm situation with global temperatures. The costs of signing it for the U.S. could be really high, as the county could be made to reduce between 10 and 20 % of greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2020, that would cause reduction of gross domestic products by 0 billion annually, it is equal to .700 per household. Certainly it was hard to prove that such costs are justified. Besides as millions of American people could be put at risk, several important questions appeared. The first one was about the possible merits or drawbacks of global warming. The World Bank researches prove that about one-third of the whole population suffers from water shortages. By 2025 they say – around 40 % of the whole population could be living in countries without sufficient water supplies. The crops will also suffer from lack of water. Global warming leads to more condensation and more evaporation, thus producing more rains. So it could be in a way an answer to the problem about lack of water. The second positive point about global warming is possibility of agriculture in North America and Europe, the southern regions of Greenland were not covered with ice when between 10th and 12th centuries the temperature was 0.5 degrees warmer than today, and could be also cultivated. The evidence of this was found when: “scientists from the National Science Foundation sponsored Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 extracted in an ice core from Greenland’s ice sheet that spanned more than 100.000 years of climate history. Samplings from the core suggest that a Little Ice Age began between 1400 and 1420, blanketing the Vikings’ farms in ice and forcing them to abandon their farms in search of more hospitable climates”.( Michael Crichton’s State of Fear: Climate Change in the Cineplex, by Amy Ridenour pp.1-5). Thus global warming could mean more agricultural productivity and more water resources.
The idea that great storms are connected with global warming is sometimes called a myth. Those who say so find little evidence to support this fact and also to support a conclusion that there is a connection between global warming and increasing number of such pests and mosquitoes that bring malaria, yellow fever and other diseases. The researches of George C. Marshal institute show that most severe storms are more associated with warm and cold weather, for example in the North Sea the storms occurred between 15th and 16th centuries after the onset of Little Ice Age. The United Health Organization writes that with the grow of international traveling and great number of migrations and refugees people have the chance to communicate more, and thus the diseases are spread more quickly, not just from one person to another, but also from one continent to another.
Another important question concerns the global warming itself. Depending on the time period we are discussing the planet is either warming or not. Our planet has experienced several periods of warming and cooling. In his article in 1994 Richard Kerr offered his point of view about this issue: “In order for a climate model to have credibility, it must first be able to reliably “predict” current climate. … Some “tune” their models by adjusting the strength of solar radiation; others by adjusting the transfer of energy between the ocean and the atmosphere to get just the desired results. The result is climate models that are largely worthless”. (When Science Meets Politics on Global Warming, by Roy W. Spencer, 1998 pp.1-4).
Another question concerns economical results of reducing of greenhouse gas emissions. The plan as to reduce them to their 1990 level by 2000 and with further reductions for 2010 and 2020. This would make the taxes for carbon dioxide raise up to 0 0 pro metric ton. Then by 2010 this could cause about 500.000 – one million job loses in U.S. The situation in Australia would be even worse, as they have a strong mining sector. The economies of developing countries would also be sensitive to these reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. The emissions in Brazil grew by 20%, in India – by 28%, in Indonesia – by 40% between 1990 and 1995.Thus developing nations and oil exporters have fears concerning their economic futures. That is why developing nations were exempted from reduction mandate under the Berlin mandate.
So the main point of political leaders is that the high costs for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are not worth the climate benefits they could bring. There is a point of view that even if such steps are necessary for improving our climate, we should not hurry and should at first improve our knowledge about causes and consequences of global warming, we should develop technology that could reduce the greenhouse emissions per unit of output, increase the reflectivity of atmosphere. The supporters of this position state that there are a lot of other important economical, scientific and political issues that need to be solved and there is no reason to rush to conclusions about global warming, as scientists themselves are a kind of swept up in the moment. Even after the Kyoto was coming into force constant debates between climate skeptics and global warming “supporters” continued. For example when Kevin Trenberth, being a head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change suggested that there was a connection between climate changes and wave of hurricanes, Christopher Landsea, hurricane expert at America’s national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wrote in his public letter that: “because of Dr. Trenberth’s pronouncements. The IPCC process has been subverted and compromised, its neutrality lost” (When Science Meets Politics on Global Warming, by Roy W. Spencer, 1998 pp.1-4).
The concepts of “nature” and “environment” were reconstructed. Actually the human-made phenomenon – global warming- is somehow considered environmental. Some people believe that this framing is political, not just conceptual problem. When the term environment is used it means something that is “out there” and needs fixing, but in reality the problem can not be considered external, as it is within people and not out. And it was and will be the humans’ problem.
Overall, the warming of the Earth has become a serious problem concerning, scientists, citizens and of course policy-makers. It is certainly hard to give one-sided characteristics to all effects, results and reasons of the global warming described above, there are certainly possibilities that not all recent researches and conclusions of scientists are true to life 100%, and the statement that in several decades we will know much more about climate changing and global warming has also some rational points. But on the other hand it is hard to deny the fact that the human beings do influence the climate and the nature greatly. These issues touch every single person on the planet and the whole mankind. They should bother the policy making people as well. They have to care for the wealth of the country but to simply deny all the negative facts about global warming is hardly the best way out. But unfortunately it usually happens so that the politics are more interested in real facts concerning finance and industrial developments than in vague future of the whole planet. As the whole industrial process and thus the economy of almost any country depends on its usage of natural resources, the climate seems a low “price” for spoiling them. When they start to think about problems caused by climate change, they think first of all about refugees, loss of job places, food shortages because of bad development of agriculture and so on.

In the Bible versus the Quran: the Moon Stood Still at the Light of the Arrows
The Moon is mentioned in the Bible 41 times, 32 times in the Old Testament and nine times in the New Testament. The Moon is mentioned in the Noble Quran 25 times
In the Bible, Habakkuk 3:11 says that the sun and moon stood still in their places at the light of your arrows as they sped, at the flash of your glittering spear.
In the Quran, Verse 35:13 says that Allah subdued the light of the sun and the moon to the service of human beings; and He has disposed the sun and the moon, each, of them, is moving, in its course, to an appointed term; to the Day of Resurrection.
———————————————–
Habakkuk 3:11 in four different versions of the Bible:
New International Version
11 Sun and moon stood still in the heavens at the glint of your flying arrows, at the lightning of your flashing spear.
New American Standard Bible
11 Sun and moon stood in their places; They went away at the light of Your arrows, At the radiance of Your gleaming spear.
English Standard Version
11 The sun and moon stood still in their place at the light of your arrows as they sped, at the flash of your glittering spear.
King James Version
11The sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of thine arrows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear.
——-
The meaning of the verse:
Sun and Moon stopped in their tracks; your flashing arrows stopped them; your lightning-strike spears impaled them.
In other words, the verse says that the sun and moon stood still in their habitation at the light of your arrows as they sped, at the flash of your glittering spear.
It should be emphasized that the bible (Joshua 10) says also that the sun and the moon stood still for 24 hours in order to give Joshua the chance to kill thousands of kids, girls, women, young men and old men.

Chapter 35: FATIR (THE ANGELS)
Verse 35:13 of the Noble Quran in four different translations:
QARIB: he causes the night to enter into the day and the day into the night. he has subjected the sun and the moon each running for a named term. such is Allah, your lord. to him belongs the kingdom; and those whom you call upon, other than him, do not possess even as much as the membrane of a date-stone.
SHAKIR: he causes the night to enter in upon the day, and he causes the day to enter in upon the night, and he has made subservient (to you) the sun and the moon; each one follows its course to an appointed time; this is Allah, your lord, his is the kingdom; and those whom you call upon besides him do not control a straw.
PICKTHAL: he maketh the night to pass into the day and he maketh the day to pass into the night. he hath subdued the sun and moon to service. each runneth unto an appointed term. such is Allah, your lord; his is the sovereignty; and those unto whom ye pray instead of him own not so much as the white spot on a date-stone.
YUSUFALI: he merges night into day, and he merges day into night, and he has subjected the sun and the moon (to his law): each one runs its course for a term appointed. such is Allah your lord: to him belongs all dominion. and those whom ye invoke besides him have not the least power.
——-
The meaning of the verse:
Allah makes the night pass, enter, into the day, so that it becomes longer, and He makes the day pass into the night, so that it becomes longer.
Allah subdued the light of the sun and the moon to the service of human beings. And He has disposed the sun and the moon, each, of them, is moving, in its course, to an appointed term; to the Day of Resurrection.
That is Allah, your Lord; to Him all sovereignty belongs.
It is Allah, your Lord, Who does so, not the deities;
His is the Sovereignty, the Storehouses of the universe
As for those on whom you call, whom you worship, besides Allah, in other words, other than Him, they do not possess even so much as the husk of a date-stone.
In other words, those unto whom you pray, those whom you worship instead of Allah, they are unable to own of all that even the white spot on a date stone, i.e., they possess nothing.

Large Round Area rugs For More Interest in Your Space
Large round rugs are a fabulous way to pull a room together. Help define your space by placing your furniture completely on top of your rug. Modern home design with open plan living is fabulous for traffic flow and entertaining but it causes difficulties when it comes to defining areas.
Large circular rugs help to visually differentiate those areas. Make your dining area feature prominently by inserting a large round area rug beneath your dining table – allowing enough room for the chairs. The round shape of the area rug assists with the inviting feel of the room and yet the the area rug provides boundaries and definition to the eating room. And in the same way a large round area rug can help establish your lounge room. Even with lack of wall boundaries and open concept space, a great rug can give your home that feeling of order.
If a living room is dull and boring and needs a lift, try an area rug. Large round area rugs can be found in many colors and in hundreds of different patterns and materials.Muted or pastel colors can soften the feel of a room. Earth toned colors can be soothing and understated while still giving your room an added oomph. Vibrant colors can change your focus and make the room look immediately brighter.
Placing your rug in the center of a room will draw the focus to it. This will visually reduce the impact of flat walls and sharp corners When a room is narrow , place the rug closer to one of the walls – this will help shift the visual focus and create an impression of more space.
In home’s lacking an entry way, place a large round rug near the doorway to give the illusion of an entry. In this way you can use a large round area rugs to define, enhance, and even visually create rooms or spaces where they don’t actually exist.
Not many decor items can finish a room like a large round rugs can. A good quality, well-placed rug can change the flow of a space, finish a room, and even visually create places in your home that haven’t existed before.

Virgin Media Takes Sky to Court
Virgin Media (VM) has taken Sky to court in the latest step in the ongoing public row between the two companies.
Sky and Virgin Media fell out at the beginning of March over the price to be charged for the carriage of the Sky Basic Channels by the cable TV provider. The two sides failed to reach an agreement before the previous contract expired and as a result VM customers lost the Sky Basic Channels, including Sky One, Sky News and Sky Sports News.
The very public fall-out and subsequent channel loss led to customers of Virgin Media both criticising and supporting their own digital TV provider. Some of those who ended up disappointed at losing such channels immediately cancelled their contracts and switched to Sky, whilst others who showed their loyalty to VM were rewarded with discounted contracts and extra services.
However, despite no agreement being reached between the two companies, Virgin Media threatened to take Sky to the High Court to resolve the row and now has done so claiming Sky was abusing its dominant market position. Sky has denied doing so and has said that the action was “without foundation” and called on Virgin to resume negotiations. VM claims that Sky tried to double its prices for the Basic Sky Channels. However, Sky says the increase would have cost VM just 3 pence per customer per day.
It is not just the price of the Sky Channels which is being challenged. Virgin Media is also challenging the rates imposed by Sky for carrying Virgin’s TV channels. It is believed that Sky recently renegotiated the price it would pay for carrying channels such as LivingTV, Challenge and Bravo, before it announced that the price for its own channels to VM would be rising. Virgin Media is hoping that it will be able to get the Sky Channels at a lower price than is being asked for and at the same time increase the price it charges Sky for its own channels to bring them more in line with current market trends.
Virgin Media brought the action under the UK Competition Act 1998 and Article 82 of the EC Treaty.
“Sky, which accounts for almost 70% of the country’s pay TV subscribers, is dominant in the UK Pay TV market and has engaged in a strategy to stifle competition by using its dominance against Virgin Media,” the company said in a statement.
Sky denied the claims and its chief operating officer Mike Darcey said that they had invited VM to return to the negotiating table and that the services Sky was offering for the higher fee would have meant a “bigger and better choice” for customers. Sky say that along with the Sky Basic Channels they had offered to include Sky Three and Sky Arts along with On Demand and High Definition services to VM customers for the increased fee.
“Virgin Media is saving money as a result of this dispute but it hasn’t reduced prices. Millions of customers have lost access to the shows they enjoy and it is clear that many resent paying full prices for fewer channels,” Mr Darcy added.
The case is ongoing.
Guide to TV discusses television options for residential customers, primarily for the UK market. Find out more about getting the best option for your home at Guide to TV.

Moon as the Earliest Calendar
I AM speaks to people through His Word, the Holy Bible. Historical, inspirational and supernatural, the Bible has been with us since calendar recording began. Readers of the Holy Bible can understand the records of ancient times. We discern what the numbered ages in the Old Testament actually mean by using three oldest calendars. Three calendar systems that help our study of Bible times are the Jewish, Mesoamerican and the Egyptian calendars. These three calendars allow us to trace back into remote prehistory. The word prehistory includes the “before time”, and the compound of “His” and “story.” Scientists who have worked with these very early cultures can provide the basic calendar methods that were once used to measure time. We need to review the Lord’s units of main time keeping to see the way ancient humanity dealt with time observation.
Early parts of the Old Testament mention days and years together. Time and the Biblical Creation include major fundamental concepts known to the ancient Jewish people. The Old Testament provides our first realistic ideas about time reckoning and recording. The Lord defines the day and night in the book of Genesis. The very first calendar of one day had begun. Description of the seven-day Creative Week further defines basic operation of the calendar. The sacred seven-day week is a fundamental religious idea. Four phases of the moon marked four weekly intervals during the month. Approximate lunar phases are attached to the origins of the calendar Sabbath week. Seven-day weeks and lunar months create the lunar-side of the lunar/solar calendars.
We are discovering ancient days when timekeepers watched the sun, moon and stars. The Jewish Calendar is simple when you understand the numbers used. The Jewish Calendar is based on the sun and moon together and measures chronology in numbered years from the Creation year 1. Modern recorded dates denote this era as B.C.E. for “Before Common Era”. Christianity dates according to the birth of Christ. The same B.C.E. initials mean “Before Christian Era” or simply B.C. for “Before Christ.” Time reckoning after Christ applies the A.D. marking of Anno Domini, which stems from the Latin meaning: “After Divinity” in the year of our Lord.
Calendar systems map world chronology according to different beginnings. Some follow Jewish tradition and put the Creation date at 5,767 years ago or about 3,761 years B.C.E. Others credit Archbishop Ussher with calculating in 1,701 A.D. that Creation took place in 4,004 B.C. The Egyptian Calendar begins between 4,236 B.C.E. and 4,241 B.C.E., along with Egyptian mythology explaining the world’s creation. Starting dates depend on star observation in Egypt, since that is the only way primal society had to mark calendar years. Another plan estimates the starting Mayan Calendar date to be 3,113 B.C.E. Shared calendar characteristics enable deeper inspection of prehistoric time reckoning. Sacred texts and current science provide clues needed to reconstruct the oldest Biblical history. Important traits gathered from past calendar time streams become woven together to obtain hybrid insight. Three ancient calendar systems form the world’s oldest trunk line of calendar science. God used a lunar/solar calendar to write listed ages for the Antediluvian Patriarchs. The family of Adam heralds new discovery from the earliest time.
Ages of Adam will aid you through better understanding of the Old Testament and significant calendar information. The work at timeemits.com stresses time reckoning and recording. We return to the origins of day and night that lead up to the sacred seven-day week to explore this affinity between God above and calendar times.
Genesis 1:4
“And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.”
God was “between” the light, and the darkness in the literal Hebrew definition. This basic interlinear Bible definition establishes a slightly different thought of God being between or separating, daylight on the one hand, and darkness on the other. This meaning sets the precedence for identifying day and night.
Genesis 1:5
“And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.”
The Lord put two great lights in heaven, one to rule the day and one to rule the night. The light of the sun measured the day and the light of the moon measured time greater than a day. The greater light is, of course, the sun. Everything we call solar deals with the sun. The lesser light, or luminary, is the moon. The word lunar relates to the moon or the month. The sun and moon identify as luminaries.
This work of God, of dividing, separating or coming between daylight and darkness to measure time is the basic premise of the original Jewish calendar. Calendars, time, and the sacred seven-day week have inspired the purest of time references to the Holy Bible. We must examine formative religions and ideas about time. In chapter 5 of Genesis, a correlation exists between the “begat” genealogy following Adam and numerical ties to ancient calendars. Adam and his descendants through Noah are the Antediluvian Patriarchs. Antediluvian tells us they were before the great flood of Noah and all were Patriarchs or fore fathers of humanity. The Holy Bible provides our greatest treasure of calendar history and early theology. The Master of the Universe, He who sits upon the throne of glory and grace, stretches forth His right hand to give us time.
We become one human race when you put man and woman together. There are two literal Hebrew definitions involved here. Adam meant “the man,” in the literal Hebrew sense of the word. Adam, the word, differs from a personal pronoun name like Bob or John. Adam is the human being, the generic man or a breathing creature. Adam in this work refers to the universal, generic meaning for man. The man is a derivative form of the root word that describes reddish clay, soil or dust. Literal word searches furnish meanings that aid our calendar study. A synthesis of faiths and mythology sharpen initial views regarding civilization. People have always marked birth and death by the calendar. Calendars unite with the spiritual afterlife in memorials. Early religions recognized conceptions of the spirit and soul after death by burial and by saying “from dust unto dust.” The lifetime of Adam is given precise lunar/solar years in chapter 5 of Genesis.
Eve is the woman in literal Hebrew. She is the life-giver, mother to the living, or child-bearer. The feminine fertility issue has always been associated with lunar observation. The lunar month forever etches upon humanity the moon — mother perceptions of ancient times. Cycles of new moons were basic time reckoning ingredients for lunar/solar calendars. Where Eve represented the feminine side of human order according to lunar observation, Adam represented the masculine, solar side, according to solar positioning on the horizon. In other words, Adam’s male image also implied meaning toward the rising and setting positions of the sun through all four seasons during the year. Adam and Eve have embedded connections with primitive cosmology.
Clarification of God resting on the seventh day defines a separation between successive time frames. God again divides, separates or is between the light and darkness of the moon. Repeated instances in a theme show a holy relationship is present between specific divisions of calendar times. Transition from one lunar phase ending to commencement of the next lunar phase is the most revered unit of time measurement known. God set aside the Sabbath Day as holy. God consecrated the Jewish Shabbat for all time to come. The sacred Jewish significance of the seven-day week and the number seven elsewhere support religious observance of the moon as an early calendar.
The lunar/solar calendar begins to emerge with a variety of ultimate connotations. Day unto night, between the weeks as Sabbath, new moon crescents and finally intercalary days all continue divine providence upon Earth. Time steps in the lunar/solar calendar accumulate for longer time cycles. Years and then multiple of years exhibit the same religious notions to vast proportions.
Changes in the appearance of the moon at night provide the seven-day week. Divisions of seven-days separate the four basic lunar phases noted in figure 1. Starting with a new moon crescent, the moon gradually comes into view on following nights. The first half of the moon is visible in about seven-days. The moon waxes until full moon at the end of two weeks. Lunar light reverses progression in the third week, waning to half visibility. A fourth week completes the month and visibility diminishes toward a new moon. Completion of four lunar phases comprises the month. The true lunar month measures 29.53-days. Ancient calendar makers recorded approximations according to actual observation. Whole lunar months of 29-days or 30-days were the common practice in lunar/solar calendar systems. The average lunar month of 29.5-days repeats upon sighting the new moon crescent. Light and darkness classify lunar phases in the lunar-side of lunar/solar calendars. Original interpretations of lunar time place God between the weeks on Sabbath Days.
Lunar/solar calendar foundations of the Jewish calendar extend from the earliest verses of scripture. Natural, uniform motions of the heavenly spheres are the pivotal markers of time reckoning. The list of ancient characters mentioned in the Old Testament used this lunar/solar calendar system of time recording. Observation of lunar phases coupled with solar positioning graduated the lifetime ages of Adam and his descendants. Well over ten thousand years ago, proto-historical calendar makers had developed advanced sciences such as mathematics and astronomy. Intercalary days add to the lunar year of twelve-moon-months in order to complete our modern solar year of 365-days. Necessary intercalations best describe lunar/solar separation time by “coming between” lunar and solar times.
Time Equations
There are 12 finished lunar months during the current 365-day-solar-year. Since day one, that has never changed. An average lunar month is about 29.5-days long measured against a starry nighttime background. There are four quarters during one-lunar-month. From new moon, which shows no moonlight, to the first phase of the moon, or half the lighted moon, about one week has passed. Moonlight waxes to full-moon stage after two weeks. Reversing the pattern, the third week of the month wanes visibility to diminish the moon’s light back to halfway again. The fourth weekly period continues the waning retreat of moonlight until again repeating the new moon. Twelve mature lunar months multiply by 29.5-days per lunar month for 354-days to approximate the lunar year (Eqn. 1).
Time differences between lunar and solar calendar years provide lunar/solar calendar adjustments or intercalations. Subtraction yields 11 days of lunar/solar separation time between the lunar year of 12-moon-months and the 365-day-solar-year (Eqn. 2). Eleven days of difference every year were the staple for lunar/solar calendars. During 19-years, 11-days of lunar/solar separation time every year multiply this division between lunar years and solar years (Eqn. 3). Lunar/solar separation time measures 209-days of difference after 19-years have passed. Therefore, any 19-year lunar/solar calendar cycle had to incorporate these remaining 209-days of separation as intercalary days in order to catch up the lunar-side of the calendar, with the solar-side of the calendar. Intercalary systems varied between cultures to compensate calendar recording. The Mayan Calendar escalates the same intercalations to distribute 210-days over a 20-year lunar/solar calendar cycle (Eqn. 3).
Throughout this text, ‘lunar/solar’ denotes calendar terminology that pertains to lunar and solar time. Variations include ‘lunar/solar separation time’ to indicate time between lunar years and solar years. Occasionally the phrase is abbreviated ‘l/s’. Lunar-side specifically addresses time measured according to lunar or moon reckoning. Solar-side time splits address time that depends upon solar or sun reckoning. Lunar/solar calendar time is the most important approach to survey ancient calendars.
Equations
1. 12-Month-Lunar-Year
29.5 day-lunar-month
x 12 lunar-months in lunar-year
= 354 day-lunar-year
2. 11-Days of Lunar/Solar Separation Time
365 day-solar-year
- 354 day-lunar-year
= 11 days of l/s separation time per l/s calendar year
3. Lunar/Solar Separation Time for 20-year-L/S-Cycle
11-days of Separation per l/s calendar year
x 19-year-l/s-calendar cycle
= 209 days of separation per 19-year-l/s-cycle
Approximates to 210 Days of Separation per 20-year l/s-cycle
The lunar/solar calendar begins to emerge with a variety of ultimate connotations. Day unto night, between the weeks as Sabbath, new moon crescents and finally intercalary days all continue divine providence upon Earth. Time steps in the lunar/solar calendar accumulate for longer time cycles. Years and then multiple of years exhibit the same religious notions to vast proportions.
Lunar/solar calendars were common throughout the ancient world. Different calendar systems employed the 19-year cycle with slight variations. Study of the Jewish Calendar provides the necessary understanding that is fundamental to lunar/solar calendar cycles. Equally important, the Jewish Calendar was the mainstay time recording plan found throughout the Old Testament.
More information regarding Jewish Calendar festival and holiday celebrations is available from the timeemits.com website. The scope of this work is primarily the treatment of l/s intercalations. Ancient and modern versions of the calendar vary slightly. A true comparison is possible only through supplementary reading in Judaism.
